2017 Shibuya Halloween Outreach

Fantastic news everybody! We’re doing it again.

But first we have to say, “Last year’s event was INCREDIBLE!

We lifted up the “Night Watch” banner of prayer and worship for a full 12 hours. Something we would never have accomplished without the glad-hearted participation from Tokyo based Ablaze HOP, YWAM Tokyo (and visiting YWAM DTS teams), several other local ministries and of course, our co-facilitator in this initiative (drum roll pleaseShibuya Evangelical Church. Their humble hearted leadership so graciously worked with us to take this from a beautiful dream into reality by hosting the whole undertaking at their facilities in Shibuya as well as taking the lead in coordinating the street outreach side of this spectacular endeavor.

The spirit of unity as we worshiped, prayed, and cross pollinated our various ministries was nothing short of beautiful. It was such an honor to be a part of pioneering this oh-so-significant event. In the year since, we’ve seen the hearts of outreach team members get (and REMAIN) set on fire for street evangelism. Our combined efforts birthed an awesome ongoing salvation story in that, our “big fish” of the night -who was wearing a wolf costume at the time-  is expected to return for this year’s festivities.  The difference is, he’ll be telling revelers about Jesus and doing so on the very same streets He encountered the King of kings for himself— twelve months ago to the day, in fact. We’ve even received word a young fellow who doesn’t yet know God expressing keen interest and saying he’d like to join in the street outreach activities for this year’s event. How’s that for awesome prospects? Non-believers getting themselves checked into the heavenly kingdom by becoming part of the actual evangelism teams? Say what? We’ll keep you posted on how that works out. All in all, if this isn’t a decent return on Kingdom investment of time and prayer, we’re not quite sure what to call it.

All of that to say, if you’re looking and in the market for something to get involved with in Tokyo on Halloween this year, we’ve got just the thing. Here are the details (and don’t forget to pass them along):

2017 SHIBUYA HALLOWEEN OUTREACH / 500TH REFORMATION DAY ANNIVERSARY

WHEN: Tuesday, October 31 | 17:30 Doors Open | 18:00 Start | 24:00 End

WHERE: Shibuya Evangelical Church (the evening’s launching off point) Click here for website (Japanese/Korean/English) & directions but here’s their street address for reference  6-17 Nanpeidai-cho, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036, Japan

WHO: You (and anyone else you want to bring) Seriously, everyone is invited and encouraged to participate regardless of language skills or church/ministerial affiliation. We desire to see the Body of Christ in Tokyo come together in unity for this event by working under the common umbrellas of prayer, worship and outreach.

WHAT:  Street outreach at and around Shibuya Crossing, “The World’s Largest Halloween Street Party”, with simultaneous prayer and worship at Shibuya Evangelical Church

WHY: In short, Jesus is worthy of it. We want to see Jesus receive the honor due Him in Tokyo and among the nations. We know from the book of Acts, revival in the church and spiritual awakening in a city and nation begins in the ‘upper room’ -the place of prayer and worship- before overflowing onto any streets. We also know Jesus commissioned His people to, “go ye therefore…” (Matthew 28.18-20) and preach the good news of the Kingdom. We are compelled, after years of observing Shibuya (and society in general) celebrate Halloween, to put our faith and feet to action. Firstly, by standing in the gap on behalf of the lost in the place of prayer and intercession. Secondly, by responding personally to Jesus’ Luke 19.10 proclamation of His destiny to, “seek and save the lost.”

Before every great move of God is a great move of prayer and worship— often times operating in the shadows. The fact Reformation Day (the day Martin Luther published his 95 theses) is also observed on October 31st is no small coincidence. In fact, 2017 is the 500th anniversary of Luther’s challenge to the presiding status quo. In keeping with the heart and true spirit of Luther’s actions, we too believe it’s high time for another historic and transformational move of God to sweep across the nations. We feel the difference will be made, in part, as the prayer & worship movements and outreach & missions movements become one working in sync with each other. We feel that this is one sure way we can become active participants in executing Jesus’ mandate to “make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28.19) Particularly since this holds so dear with God’s heart for great and powerful mega cities which He so clearly communicated in Jonah 4.11 “...if you can get upset about a plant surely I can feel sorry for a big city like Nineveh. There are many people and animals in that city. There are more than 120,000 people there who did not know they were doing wrong.” (ERV)

HOW: In a two pronged approach, we are hosting sustained prayer and worship (prayer room) in the sanctuary at Shibuya Evangelical Church. At the same time, we will facilitate street outreach teams by serving as an operations base for those wishing to participate in evangelism initiatives at and around Shibuya Crossing area. Participants are free to come and go as they feel led. They are also free to participate in only the prayer room, only the street outreach or a mix of both

God’s love is very intense for Japan…

Here’s a word about revival for Japan from October 28, 2001. It’s by Cindy Jacobs from the Prophetic Intercession Conference at Harvest Rock Church. Though short, it’s very sweet and well worth the read.

God’s love is very intense for Japan…
Prophetic Intercession Conference, Harvest Rock Church

I have a WORD for Japan. Oh, I’m so excited. God’s love is very intense for Japan and the Lord would say, “Surely I have heard the cries of my Japanese people. Many have said revival cannot come to Japan, but I would say, TRULY I am going to do a work that the nations will wonder at when they hear about Japan, says the Lord.“
For my Japanese people are my warriors and I am getting ready to release a new sound of war that will be a God sound out of Japan.
The Lord says: I am truly going to move among the students, for there will be a student revival which will be birthed, says the Lord. The Lord says, I am going to move… form Hokkaido to Okinawa, I am going to move from the North to the South and I’m going to move from the North to the South an I’m going to come together by MY SPIRIT, says the Lord… and the Lord says, “For this is the day I am going to reconcile the evangelicals and the new churches … the charismatic type of church… I am getting ready to move by my Spirit and Japan is a sword in my hand …
And I will move the Japanese and they will touch Bangladesh, all of Southeast Asia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Lord says … I am getting ready to send missionaries, missionaries, missionaries, for there will be a missions movement out of Japan says the Lord…
And the Lord says … “I will not forget the cries of my martyrs and the cries of my people from this great Nation, says the Lord.”

Japan in Crisis and Disaster

In response to the April 14-16, 2016 earthquakes in Kyushu Island, and to aid Japan in crisis and disaster situations in the future, here’s a handy reference list of organizations actively involved in relief operations. We will develop the list further as time goes on.

Japan based organizations involved in humanitarian aid work and crisis response and disaster relief that we vouch for (in alphabetical order):

CRASH Japan
CRASH stands for “Christian Relief Assistance Support Hope”
CRASH Japan is a NPO Christian disaster relief organization based in Tokyo and is officially recognized by the Japanese government. They work hard at equipping and preparing churches and missions to be ready to respond when a disaster strikes. When disasters occur, they mobilize Christian volunteers to work with churches and other local ministries.

Japan Emergency Team
Founded in 1989, Japan Emergency Team (JET) is one of Japan’s oldest faith based NPO/NGO crisis and disaster relief organizations. Their responses have spanned the globe with deployments to both natural and man-made disasters. They were also one of the first NGOs invited to work in the Japanese Government’s Central Disaster Relief Center.

Operation Safe
OperationSAFE focuses on child friendly trauma intervention by teaching children five core principles of emotional recovery and even survival after trauma. They do this through stories, crafts, songs and games— effectively reaching children on their level and in their language. The OperationSAFE team also trains and equips local churches to perform OperationSAFE workshops in their areas in their local languages.

The Altar IHOP, Tokyo
Since The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 crisis response and disaster relief has been a ministry mandate for us. We consider it among our ‘least of these’ or mercy missions. One of the thing we love to do is go out with teams into hard hit areas and offer up prayer and worship in the affected areas— it does much to shift the atmosphere over a region. In addition to serving in whatever capacity we’re needed, we make it a point to minister to the local pastors and residents who find themselves thrust into the role of emergency responders overnight. Often, these ones are some of the most overlooked disaster victims because they end up serving the administrative needs all of the responders who come in to do the field work.

The Attributes of God | an Infographic

One of the things we pursue at The Altar IHOP, Tokyo is deepening our understanding of who God is individually and corporately. The word we often use to describe this process is ‘intimacy.’ Intimacy in the way people develop a knowingness between themselves after spending considerable time getting to know one another. i.e. Close friends, family, spouses, etc. As followers of ‘the Way’ and lovers of God, our desire to know Him for who He is above and beyond what He can do for us or what we can get out of Him is as necessary as breathing air. Intentionally studying the attributes of God is one way of developing intimacy and knowingness with Him.

The First Commandment

The first commandment which Jesus himself reiterated, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and, all your soul and, with all your mind,”  is a foundational element of the house of prayer. Growing in intimacy with God cannot be achieved without putting Jesus’ commandment to action. Psalm 24 highlights this by declaring the truth of who God is in His sovereignty and as a King. Psalm 24 also describes the kind of relationship we can have with God that will bring blessing upon ourselves. Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? …. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, who seek Your face.”

The Attributes of God

Seeking His face is another aspect of developing intimacy and knowingness. It is the act of getting to know God for who He is as God. This is what Moses meant when he prayed in Exodus 33“…show me now Your way, that I may know you….”

An excellent visual aid to study, grow and expand one’s understanding and knowingness of God, the infographic below does a wonderful job laying out and highlighting the beauty and wonder of His primary character and attributes. It is a handy reference tool to print out and keep in a bible or with study materials. Even better, why not save it as a PDF for easy access on a mobile device, tablet or computer when offline.
