Fantastic news everybody! We’re doing it again.
But first we have to say, “Last year’s event was INCREDIBLE!”
We lifted up the “Night Watch” banner of prayer and worship for a full 12 hours. Something we would never have accomplished without the glad-hearted participation from Tokyo based Ablaze HOP, YWAM Tokyo (and visiting YWAM DTS teams), several other local ministries and of course, our co-facilitator in this initiative (drum roll please) Shibuya Evangelical Church. Their humble hearted leadership so graciously worked with us to take this from a beautiful dream into reality by hosting the whole undertaking at their facilities in Shibuya as well as taking the lead in coordinating the street outreach side of this spectacular endeavor.
The spirit of unity as we worshiped, prayed, and cross pollinated our various ministries was nothing short of beautiful. It was such an honor to be a part of pioneering this oh-so-significant event. In the year since, we’ve seen the hearts of outreach team members get (and REMAIN) set on fire for street evangelism. Our combined efforts birthed an awesome ongoing salvation story in that, our “big fish” of the night -who was wearing a wolf costume at the time- is expected to return for this year’s festivities. The difference is, he’ll be telling revelers about Jesus and doing so on the very same streets He encountered the King of kings for himself— twelve months ago to the day, in fact. We’ve even received word a young fellow who doesn’t yet know God expressing keen interest and saying he’d like to join in the street outreach activities for this year’s event. How’s that for awesome prospects? Non-believers getting themselves checked into the heavenly kingdom by becoming part of the actual evangelism teams? Say what? We’ll keep you posted on how that works out. All in all, if this isn’t a decent return on Kingdom investment of time and prayer, we’re not quite sure what to call it.
All of that to say, if you’re looking and in the market for something to get involved with in Tokyo on Halloween this year, we’ve got just the thing. Here are the details (and don’t forget to pass them along):
2017 SHIBUYA HALLOWEEN OUTREACH / 500TH REFORMATION DAY ANNIVERSARY
WHEN: Tuesday, October 31 | 17:30 Doors Open | 18:00 Start | 24:00 End
WHERE: Shibuya Evangelical Church (the evening’s launching off point) Click here for website (Japanese/Korean/English) & directions but here’s their street address for reference 6-17 Nanpeidai-cho, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036, Japan
WHO: You (and anyone else you want to bring) Seriously, everyone is invited and encouraged to participate regardless of language skills or church/ministerial affiliation. We desire to see the Body of Christ in Tokyo come together in unity for this event by working under the common umbrellas of prayer, worship and outreach.
WHAT: Street outreach at and around Shibuya Crossing, “The World’s Largest Halloween Street Party”, with simultaneous prayer and worship at Shibuya Evangelical Church
WHY: In short, Jesus is worthy of it. We want to see Jesus receive the honor due Him in Tokyo and among the nations. We know from the book of Acts, revival in the church and spiritual awakening in a city and nation begins in the ‘upper room’ -the place of prayer and worship- before overflowing onto any streets. We also know Jesus commissioned His people to, “go ye therefore…” (Matthew 28.18-20) and preach the good news of the Kingdom. We are compelled, after years of observing Shibuya (and society in general) celebrate Halloween, to put our faith and feet to action. Firstly, by standing in the gap on behalf of the lost in the place of prayer and intercession. Secondly, by responding personally to Jesus’ Luke 19.10 proclamation of His destiny to, “seek and save the lost.”
Before every great move of God is a great move of prayer and worship— often times operating in the shadows. The fact Reformation Day (the day Martin Luther published his 95 theses) is also observed on October 31st is no small coincidence. In fact, 2017 is the 500th anniversary of Luther’s challenge to the presiding status quo. In keeping with the heart and true spirit of Luther’s actions, we too believe it’s high time for another historic and transformational move of God to sweep across the nations. We feel the difference will be made, in part, as the prayer & worship movements and outreach & missions movements become one working in sync with each other. We feel that this is one sure way we can become active participants in executing Jesus’ mandate to “make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28.19) Particularly since this holds so dear with God’s heart for great and powerful mega cities which He so clearly communicated in Jonah 4.11 “...if you can get upset about a plant surely I can feel sorry for a big city like Nineveh. There are many people and animals in that city. There are more than 120,000 people there who did not know they were doing wrong.” (ERV)
HOW: In a two pronged approach, we are hosting sustained prayer and worship (prayer room) in the sanctuary at Shibuya Evangelical Church. At the same time, we will facilitate street outreach teams by serving as an operations base for those wishing to participate in evangelism initiatives at and around Shibuya Crossing area. Participants are free to come and go as they feel led. They are also free to participate in only the prayer room, only the street outreach or a mix of both.
